Significant Digits aren't limited to Chemistry; or more sufficiently accuracy applies to Automobiles, Hondas and Accuras in particular. Automotive warranties are typically restricted by time/or and mileage. Variations in the measurement of time probably don't occur very often, certainly not as frequently as variations in mileage.
If your car warranty is for 36,000 miles then you should be covered for 36,000 miles, certainly not 35,000, or 35,900 miles. But, if your odometer runs just a little fast, say just five percent fast, then when your odometer says you've traveled 100 miles you've only gone 95 miles; when your odometer says you've gone 1,000 miles you've only actually traveled 950. Say you've purchased an extended warranty--let's say a 100,000 mile extended warranty: If your odometer runs 5% fast then the warranty will run out before it should--5,000 miles too soon.
This isn't hypothetical. This is what happened to with a number of Honda and Accura brand automobiles. Read the full story from the March 30, 2008 New York Times.
